The Dumke Gymnastics Center is the crown jewel of collegiate gymnastics training facilities. This 18,000 square foot stand-alone facility, which opened in 1999, provides the University of Utah gymnastics program with everything needed to train, recover, and prepare at the highest level.
A Facility Born from Generosity
The Dumke Gymnastics Center was made possible through a generous $1 million donation from the Zeke and Katherine Dumke family. Their investment in the program provided Utah gymnastics with a dedicated home that few collegiate programs can match. The facility stands as a testament to the Dumke family's commitment to excellence and their belief in the power of intercollegiate athletics.
When the center opened in 1999, it immediately elevated the training environment for the Red Rocks. For the first time, the team had a self-contained facility designed specifically for gymnastics, rather than sharing space with other sports and programs. This dedicated space has been instrumental in maintaining Utah's position as one of the premier gymnastics programs in the nation.
Facility Features
The Dumke Gymnastics Center is entirely self-contained, meaning the gymnasts have everything they need under one roof. The facility includes:
- Full gymnastics training floor equipped with the latest gymnastics equipment for all four events
- Loose foam and resi-pits for safely training new skills and perfecting technique
- High-tech video playback systems that allow coaches and athletes to review training in real time
- Bungee systems for assisted skill development and progression
- Dedicated locker room exclusively for the gymnastics team
- Athletic training and rehabilitation room for injury prevention and recovery
- Aerobics and flexibility area for conditioning and warm-up routines
- Strength and conditioning space for gymnastics-specific weight training
2022 Expansion Project
In March 2022, a major $4.6 million expansion project broke ground at the Dumke Gymnastics Center. The project, completed in December 2022, represented a significant investment in the future of the program and addressed growing needs as the team continued to compete at the highest levels of collegiate gymnastics.
Expansion Highlights: The $4.6 million project broke ground in March 2022 and was completed by December 2022, adding critical new spaces to the already world-class facility.
The expansion added several key features to the facility:
- A partial second story, dramatically increasing the usable space within the existing building footprint
- An expanded locker room with modern amenities for the full roster of student-athletes
- New coaching offices providing dedicated workspace for the entire coaching staff
- A team lounge where athletes can relax, study, and build team chemistry outside of training
- A balcony overlooking the training floor, offering a unique vantage point for observation and recruiting visits
- An improved athletic training area with expanded space and updated equipment for rehabilitation and recovery
The completion of the expansion ensures that the Dumke Gymnastics Center remains one of the finest gymnastics-specific training facilities in the country, providing the Red Rocks with a competitive advantage in both training and recruiting.
The Bronze Statue
In 2018, a bronze statue was dedicated outside the Dumke Gymnastics Center, adding a striking artistic element to the facility's entrance. The statue was created by former Utah assistant coach Jim Stephenson and was donated by the Dumke family, continuing their longstanding support of the program.
The statue carries deep symbolic meaning for the program. It features a figure that represents all former, current, and future Utah gymnasts, honoring the legacy of every athlete who has worn the crimson and white. Surrounding the figure are 10 columns, each one representing one of Utah's national championships. Together, the elements of the statue celebrate the rich history and bright future of Red Rocks gymnastics.
10 columnsrepresent each of Utah's national championships, while the central figure honors every gymnast who has been part of the Red Rocks tradition.
A Recruiting Advantage
The Dumke Gymnastics Center plays a vital role in recruiting the nation's top gymnasts to the University of Utah. When prospective student-athletes visit campus, the facility makes an immediate impression. The combination of dedicated training space, top-of-the-line equipment, comprehensive support services, and the recent expansion sends a clear message: Utah gymnastics is committed to providing its athletes with the best possible environment to succeed both in the gym and in the classroom.
Few programs in the country can offer a comparable stand-alone facility, and the Dumke Gymnastics Center remains a cornerstone of Utah's ability to attract elite talent from across the nation and around the world.
